Cannabis Conflicts with Medications? — Talk to Your Doctor!

We’ve said “talk to your doctor about cannabis” before, and meant educate your GP about its benefits for salving or managing illnesses. But there are other reasons to talk to other doctors about cannabis too, even recreational use: cannabis conflicts with medications.

I came across a Tumblr post recently warning people to cop to using cannabis to anesthesiologist … so you don’t wake up during surgery. Pretty frightening since I’m facing surgery and had no idea this was even a thing — I’ve never been anaesthetized while a regular cannabis user.

A Tribute to Late Activists Mary Elizabeth Woodside and Stephanie Leigh Hooker

During these last few years of writing, most of it has been opinion-based or experience-based, and most definitely from a personal place. This isn’t an article about Weed Woman or Tracy Curley but a subject that has certainly impacted my life: depression and cannabis.

As a society we now know that prohibiting drugs carries a host of unintended and undesirable consequences. These include an increase in demand, a guaranteed unregulated underground market, and great disrespect for police and laws. But the most glaring example of the failure of prohibition is the current opioid overdose crisis.

What’s the Problem?

This crisis, recently declared a public health emergency in the USA, has also killed many thousands of people in Canada over the past two years — mostly due to street opioids being adulterated with fentanyl. Here in British Columbia there have been over 1000 overdose deaths already this year. Politicians, health care professionals, and society in general are trying to find solutions.

It’s Time to Talk About CBD For Anxiety

Twelve High Chicks thanks guest contributor Chris Visser for this article on using CBD for anxiety.

A long time back now, I wrote an article about tackling some of my health issues with cannabis instead of pharmaceuticals. Cannabis helped mostly with arthritis and pain caused by a hormone disorder. And it helped with daily stress, which mostly kept down my anxiety. But it could also sometimes make my anxiety, panic attacks, and PTSD symptoms worse.

Taboo 2017 — Stoned at the (Naughty But Nice) Sex Show

Every February for the past six years I’ve descended upon the Taboo Naughty but Nice Sex Show here in Vancouver. Usually as one of my alter egos, Pennie Belle. Always with Bonerattle Talent as entertainment in various different capacities, or with Pin-up Perfection photography as live model and promo girl.

Many of my friends are also there as either staff, vendors or attendees. Most are dressed to the nines, or dressed very little. There are themes and outfit changes. It’s kind of a big deal for a lot of us.

“‘Participating in this business activity means that you must be willing to adhere to a strict set of regulations,’ [Bill Blair, federal point person on the legalization of marijuana] told a conference of investors, Bay Street lawyers and several executives from the licensed firms. ‘The current licensed producers are competing with people who don’t care about the law, who don’t care about regulations, don’t care about kids, they don’t care about communities, don’t care about health of Canadians. They’re pretty reckless about it. And so they’re selling anything to make a fast buck before we get the regulations put in place.’” The Globe and Mail, May 24th, 2016.

“Fuck you, Bill Blair.”

That’s the thought that runs through my head every time I hear or read that statement.

Don’t Let Self-Medicating Become Self-Harm

I have been known to attempt to self-medicate my problems away. I have done ever since I was able to find someone old enough to hit the liquor store for me and I discovered that smoking pot helped me forget my problems. Now, before you shut down this article because that sentence put booze and marijuana in the same category, hear me out: when it comes to mental health, self-medicating with marijuana and alcohol are comparable.

Meditation, Movement, and Marijuana — Going Forward

Twelve High Chicks thanks Guest Contributor Darla Zanolli for this article.

Marijuana and Movement Meditation

Beyond stationary meditation and walking meditation for beginners, more advanced forms of marijuana and movement meditation include yoga and Tai Chi. Both traditional forms focus on precise movements that fluidly transition to the next pose using our breath, muscles, heart, mind, and positive energy. Both have similar goals beyond physical health: to help ease mental issues, relieve stress, and help us become more mindful. And both can be combined successfully with marijuana.

Marijuana and Walking Meditation

Everyone meditates differently from the next person, and we meditate for different reasons: to relieve our anxiety or depression, be more self aware, or just to feel overall healthier. Essentially it is all inner-activity which we cannot define in rigid terms.

A Candid Interview With Brian O’Dea

I first was introduced to Brian O’Dea, a polite and distinguished gentleman, when I travelled to Ottawa in December 2014 to meet other cannabis freedom activists and to screen Adam Scorgie’s The Culture High. With a polished demeanour and extensive vocabulary, Brian wouldn’t strike you as the type of person who would ‘move’ copious amounts of cannabis around the world. He is educated, experienced, and skilled in his endeavours. He’s known to be one of smartest criminals the DEA has ever managed to catch; it was only after he’d retired as drug lord that the DEA finally managed to gather enough evidence to convict him.
